WHAT IS CATECHESIS?
Historically, the church has guided confirmands through a season of preparation that has included prayer and instruction on practicing the Christian faith. This instruction is commonly referred to as “catechesis” which ultimately leads to confirmation.
Confirmation at TWMC in May is available to all incoming 6th graders who register to participate in our catechesis. The schedule of our catechesis aligns with the school year, starting in August and ending in May. Our catechesis is segmented into three main phases throughout the school year and focuses on a different theme each month. From August to November (Roots), your confirmand will be rooted in God’s Word and an understanding of the biblical narrative. From December to February (Grow), your confirmand will grow their personal discipleship and worship of Jesus Christ. From March to May (Thrive), your confirmand will thrive to serve others and advance the kingdom of God in the world.
Confirmands are placed in a “House” group of 7-10 students to journey and grow together in community throughout the school year. Houses are led by a combination of parents, adult leaders and high school student leaders. Within a small group, your confirmand will develop a spiritual foundation while building valuable relationships with the other students and leaders of their group.
Catechesis occurs about three Sunday mornings per month as Houses gather to learn about and live out the Christian faith together through “sessions.” Sunday morning sessions include prayers, readings and testimonies, biblical lessons, small group discussions, and group activities. Sessions allow learning to be heard, processed aloud, and applied through creative, collaborative and engaging outlets. Sunday morning sessions begin at 9:00 a.m. in Wesley Hall on The Woodlands Campus and 12:30 p.m. on the Woodforest Campus.
Participation in the confirmation program requires worship attendance at TWMC, memory work of designated passages, attendance at a confirmation retreat, completion of service projects, devotional Bible study, and attendance at Sunday morning sessions.
