One Generation to the Next

One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. – Psalm 145:4

This past weekend, more than 350 students gathered for Forge, our annual student retreat, to worship, seek the Lord and deepen their faith. Students from our church and other churches in the greater Houston area, filled our sanctuary. But what moved me most was what happened after the music began.

On Saturday night, I had the privilege of sitting in on worship and the teaching from Rev. Mark Swayze. As I looked across the room, I saw teenagers on their knees, hands extended, worshipping with such authenticity and passion. Truly, it was a holy moment for me – one that reminded me of Psalm 145:4. We often talk about investing in the next generation, pouring into them, equipping them to carry the faith forward. And we should! It’s an important vision of our church.

But this weekend, I was reminded that the next generation also pours into us.

There is something about the uninhibited, unashamed worship of our youth that challenges and inspires those of us who have been on the journey of faith a little longer. Their fire, their hunger for God, their willingness to respond – it reminds us of what really matters. It calls us deeper.

Friends, I have to say that I am so grateful to be part of a multigenerational church, where faith isn’t just passed down but also passed back up. Where the wisdom of experience meets the fire and heart of our youth. Where we are all shaped, together, by the presence of God.

Let me both encourage and challenge us all. May we continue to pour into the next generation, and may we also be willing to receive what they have to give because, as this weekend reminded me, they have much to teach us.

Today, whatever season you’re in, hold on to Philippians 4:4 – rejoice not in your circumstances but in the Lord. And here’s the good news, friends: Even in the wilderness, even in the bitter moments, He is always the One who refreshes and restores.
